One day I decided to do something with an old dress bought in a Chinese store, which I wore once, if at all. Unfortunately, it was a year ago and back then I did not even dream of having this page, so I do not have the picture of the original dress.

However, I will show you the effects you can obtain by yourself with an old dress and a sewing machine. I hope it will inspire you or it will give you an idea to make a use of your unworn skirts.

redesigned dress

The waist was elasticated, so I cut the dress in two parts, making a cut just above the rubber band. Then i used a zig-zag stitch to finish the upper part so that would not shred.

You can also sew the top with a thick black rubber elastic, maybe then the skirt would look like better finished, but I was satisfied effect I got without it.

After the lower part of the skirt has redesigned I still had a lot of cloth of the top. At about the same time I was wondering how to convert an old denim jacket.

Here is the result:

Decorating a shirt or jacket by sewing colored scraps of material is really easy. With a basic knowledge of how to sew on a sewing machine, you do it in one afternoon.

You should only cut the fabric in the shape you want to apply on denim, leaving a 1 cm (0.5 in) on each side to bend the material making an overlap. Only than it looks properly finished.

Then you have to iron the edges and pin it so that the application lie better on denim during the sewing… And sew!

making denim jacket applications

Use only a simple straight stitch.

Do not be discouraged if something does not work out. Most stitches can be easily ripped out.

The only thing we cannot revert, is how we cut the material, so be careful and double-check whether or not cutting out too small shapes (keep in you need mind 1 cm extra for an overlap). It is far better to leave too much than not enough.

Good luck and successful redesign of your old dresses!
